We all knew it would happen sooner or later, but our cover star this issue, Ten Walls, has shifted the direction of dancefloors. Hypnotic, progressive grooves are back. Tired of the manufactured fake house that’s clogging up the charts, peeps are flocking to sounds that really represent that heady, transcendent (did someone say trance?) feeling of release in the club. Ten Walls is a classically trained musician, so he has a deep understanding of melody. But rather than squander that on some mainstream pop, he’s crafted a series of massive tunes that blow clubs and festivals to smithereens — and have still made big dents in the charts, without a vocal in sight.
You can bet that his widescreen synth concoction is going to dictate what house sounds like in 2015, at least where the underground is concerned.
